The larger Bowie is an excellent example of a massive Southern style side arm. A huge 13-inch clip point blade bears a CP mark, typical of a frontier blacksmiths work. It is hard to date, but I have been advised probably from Texas or possibly California or Mexico. The sheaf which I believe to be original to the knife is in the Southern Western style often worn through the sash or belt. The stag grip is complemented by a well-made brass fitting with a huge fighting type guard. There is a IXL mark to the ricasso. This is quite common. The IXL brand was well known in the West and blades were often marked to imitate the English imports. Or, added later to enhance the appeal. This is a great example of a real frontier knife and at a whopping eighteen inches it’s a lot of knife in any ones language.
