Leupold 172830 LTO Tracker allows hunters to walk about in the dark, when normally you cannot see. I use the thermal initially as a spotter rather than as an identifier. It makes scanning open areas for pests fairly easy. It uses differentials of temperature giving quite a clear picture of the surrounds. When used at night, it enables me to walk about, spotting for target animals heat images.
Once spotted I can determine if I need to get into position; then when I’m ready, I turn on my spot light, acquire the target. Usually it’s un-alerted. A secondary benefit is being able to locate downed game. Such as a fox or rabbit downed in long grass. I think that I can pick up a human sized target at 250m and for bunnies max 100m.
