Shooters spend big money on their riflescopes - but how much do they really know about what they are buying?

Samuel B. Mann argues the much-vaunted lenses, coatings and variable ranges are less important than mechanical design in many applications.

Many brands, from the cheapest to most expensive, claim their scopes are recoil proof, yet breakdowns are hardly unknown now in any category. Long-and-lifetime warranties were once assurances of quality but rarely needed. Now faulty products seem common, but repaired or replaced with no questions asked or answers given.

This may leave customers with a warm fuzzy over the friendly service - but not if their scopes pack up in the middle of Africa or an important competition.

'LIGHT AT THE START OF THE TUNNEL - Are rifle scopes off the rails?'
is a BOOK about what's wrong with modern scopes.

It traces the telescopic sight's descent from mechanical-and-optical integrity to the dubious advances of constantly centred reticles, illumination and excess magnification, looking at the designs and specifications of many models and drawing on knowledgeable opinion to reach conclusions.

The author also goes into where you might look for the best scopes made today, good but old scopes on the Internet, collecting and mounting old scopes, notes on makers and how they could get back on track.

This offer NOW includes eight extra colour pages and an eight-page supplement added since publication. (The supplement's digital version has expanded further, now to 20 pages.)

205x140mm, 152pp, incl 28 colour pages, line drawings, tables and index. Australian postage is now included in the prices below. For security, mailing addresses and payment details should be made through the SSAA classifieds messages or email.

1 - Standard copies but with the 20 extra pages now to be emailed as PDFs, post paid: $24.30

2 - Enhanced copies with 16 extra text and photo pages printed and inserted (eight glued in): $30, including registered post

3 - The enhanced book (2 - ) with a black reticle (stamped or drawn as req. on the cover) including registered post: $37.60

4 - Standard copies (1 - ) but with reticles or other stampings that have smudged or not worked properly, posted: $15

NB: The author thanks his daughter, TL Harrisson, for the sausages drawing. The second picture shows a digital approximation of the black-reticle special cover. The fourth one gives a clue to one of the added photo pages. The calibre and firearm specs h/w are a joke, to get the ad into the 'Rifles' category.
