Samuel B. Mann has shot buffalo in Africa and the Northern Territory and a sambar in Victoria over express sights but argues in his high-calibre BOOK that they are less reliable than a properly set-up scope can be.
No, he does not endorse the current state of scope making, believing it to be a decadence aimed at the lowest common denominator rather than hunters who need absolute confidence in their equipment. Its failure when on safari may hit you worse than the sting of the tsetse fly sitting on Sam's barrels.
However, the stuff you can trust still exists - and could be made again if the quality-optics makers had the guts to do the right thing.
The book's standard discount price is still $20 but buyers can have an additional 20 pages of information sent via email, for no extra charge.
205x140mm, 152pp, incl 28 colour pages, line drawings, tables and index. Australian postage is now included in the prices below. For security, mailing addresses and payment details should be made through the SSAA classified's messages or email.
1 - Standard copies but with the 16 extra pages now to be emailed as PDFs, post paid: $24.30
2 - Enhanced copies with the extra text and photo pages printed and inserted, without a black reticle on the cover, including registered post: $30
3 - The enhanced book (2 - ) with a black reticle (stamped or drawn as req.), including registered post: $35 (The quality of reticles and fitting of stuck-in pages can vary)
4 – The best-enhanced book (3 - ) when the reticle and fitting of stuck-in pages has worked unusually well, but only when available: $45.
5 - Standard copies (1 - ) but with reticles or other stampings that have smudged or not worked as expected, posted: $15
NB: The second photo is of the author's Mozambique cape buffalo, NOW included in the book. Airgun details h/w are needed to put the ad in the rifle category. The fourth pic shows a digital representation of the optional black reticle - the stamped version has shorter sidebars to limit overprinting lettering.
